Once upon a time...

Meet the Director...

Paula Kalustian

You've recently retired from being the Director of the Musical Theatre MFA program here at SDSU, and your resume is long and full - what led you down the path of directing musical theatre in particular?
I started out dancing, choreographing and performing but by the time I was in my early 20's teaching and directing became my main activity.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Recognize and completely cherish the good times!

What has been your scariest moment as a director (for any show in your career)?
The scariest times are always about actors getting hurt. I am especially focused on safety in the theatre space.

What is your process for choosing a show to direct?
When I was younger - any show I could find to work on! But - now I want to find material that is relevant to my voice, contribute to the social good and spark some passion in me.

When did you first experience Into the Woods? What were your first reactions?
Saw it at the Old Globe - too long and telling too many stories. Then on Broadway - Stunning!

You've directed Into the Woods a few times before, here at SDSU, can you describe (without giving anything away) what will make this production different than the others?
This production is in the Experimental Theatre which changes everything. This telling of the story - is about real people who have real life challenges in modern society. We use a story theatre like approach to the design and staging.

Is the story you're telling with this production about something different or new compared to past productions of Into the Woods for you?
The themes are the same - but the telling method is always different with each new production and each new audience.

What excites you about this group of artists working on this production with you?
I am always excited to have a rehearsal process with the MFA musical theatre students. They are professional and the rehearsals are fulfilling and productive. This group of undergraduates are also excellent. The cast is perfectly matched to the material.

If you could describe this show in one word, what would that be?
Can't do it in one word...how about four?
Wishes...and their consequences.
